Bárcena Mayor is by the river Lodar, the first important
flowing of the river Saja. This village, in its totality, is the
best conserved and the best example of what our villages were
like many years ago.
Centenary houses with very big eaves, old porches called "socarreñas"
made with thick and coarse beams, stone walls, bread ovens that
can be recognised from the streets and make you think of the sensation
of hot that they can give indoors.

|
|
|
|
|
It was declared historic-artistic group in 1979.
Its importance consists of being a very compact group of rural
architecture that is in very good condition (houses, laundries,
stables, bread ovens, …). We can point out wood, stone and
tile as the main building materials. Nowadays, it receives a great
deal of visitors during the whole year.

| Picos de europa |
 |
|
With
a total surface of 64,660 hectares (24,560 in Asturias, 24,719 in
Leon and 15,381 in Cantabria) it is the second largest Natural Park
in the country, after Sierra Nevada (86,208 hectares). In the western
massif of Picos de Europa we can find the ancient Natural Park of
Covadonga, which was declared a Natural Park by Your Majesty Alfonso
XII in 1918, becoming this way the first one in Spain and one of
the pioneering in the world. |
This wild scenery keeps a legendary history for
people from Asturias, in addition to some valuable treasure like
The Covadonga Lakes. It is an unsurpassable scenery where many
icy phenomenon such as gorges, chasms, valleys, icy lakes and
sharp peaks, … take place. We also have to mention the impressive
peaks such as Torrecedo (2,646 m.), The Tesorero (2,568 m.) and
the famous Naranjo de Bulnes or Picu Urriellu (2,518 m.) that
with the thick beech groves, oak woods and mixed forests are the
favourite refuge for chamois, roe deers, deers, capercaillies,
vultures and eagles.

| PARQUE
DE LA NATURALEZA DE CABÁRCENO |
|
 |
|
|
|
|
The Natural Park of Cabarceno is a beautiful paradise
where hundreds of animals from all the zoological areas of the
world are in semi-freedom. In this reservation of animals in danger
of extinction you can find, like in no other place in Europe,
fauna from very far places such as tigers, bears, lions, jaguars,
elephants, rhinoceros, giraffes, buffalos, … which live
and breed in a thousand-year-old habitat.
|
|
|
|
| |
Cabarceno
is different from other zoological parks because of the large space
that the animals have, which allows their movement and contemplation
in a more natural environment. Moreover, it also has some lakes
to practice the trout fishing. As a complement to its installations,
there is also a reptile house with an specialised collection of
snakes. Finally, the park also has panoramic viewpoints, walking
zones, playgrounds, restaurants, car parks and souvenirs shops. |
